The Artist's Story

About Dakota Lane

2020 changed everything we thought we knew about our daily lives. Working in the emergency room and seeing the pandemic unfold from the beginning felt like living in an altered reality. Considering there aren’t many practical ways to save lives remotely, we would spend 12 hour days clad from head to toe in PPE, shedding layers at the door every night to avoid infecting our loved ones. Everyone had a coping mechanism– some gardened; others baked. For me, it was pouring resin. What started as a 3am hobby for stress relief gradually turned into something much more– a creative proliferation of work I wanted to share.

It’s not difficult to see that in the U.S., our healthcare system is being held together with duct tape and determination. My ultimate dream now is not only to share beautiful bits of light and joy, but to build a community that agrees that we deserve better. One that embraces science, empathizes with their fellow humans, and feels anchored enough within themselves to be a catalyst for change. For me, Quantum Sunshine is much more than a casual endeavor or a midnight hobby. It’s a first step towards changing the world.

The artistic process

My early resin work started with color, and then progressed to the familiar inclusions– dried flowers, gold flakes, and tumbled glass. My sentimental heart began experimenting more with various methods of paper preservation, using scraps of old books from my grandmother's collection. I started hunting for old medical texts on E-Bay and in thrift stores and quickly realized that even though outdated, they often contained beautiful and striking sources of inspiration. I saw more in the medical images, and turned sub-compositions into abstract pieces that moved me.

I eventually created a small home microscopy lab to create my own images from everyday compounds, in addition to sourcing them from scientific archives.

Handcrafted testosterone molecule microscopy cufflinks in silver-plated brass with resin finish. Bold science jewelry gift for people in STEM. Lifestyle image.

After a string of particularly grueling shifts, I acknowledged that my neurodivergent soul longed for the chance to spend my days doing what fueled me, instead of what drained me. I quit my full-time position in the ER to work part-time and give Quantum Sunshine a real chance at success.

I fully acknowledge that growing this brand from nothing seemed impossible... But I like to believe in at least six impossible things before breakfast.
